The Knoxville Police Department is saddened to announce the retirement of Waggoner, one of the original members of the KPD’s Mounted Patrol Unit.
Waggoner was recently diagnosed with polysaccharide storage myopathy (PSSM), a common genetic muscular disorder that can cause discomfort and limit a horse’s ability to perform strenuous activity. The condition is hereditary and was previously undiagnosed in Waggoner, until he began showing symptoms in the last couple of months.
Waggoner was purchased with federal grant funding through Texas-based Mounted Patrol International LLC in late 2024 and officially hit the streets in May. Due to the previously undiagnosed condition, Mounted Patrol International is sending a replacement horse at no expense. The new Mounted Patrol Unit addition is expected to arrive in the coming weeks.
Once diagnosed with PSSM, Waggoner was removed from mounted patrol duties. The KPD decided that retirement from mounted patrol operations was the best choice for Waggoner’s long-term health and well-being.
Mounted Patrol International re-took possession of Waggoner and, with the support and assistance of the Mounted Patrol Unit, earlier this week he was transferred to Faith N Friends Horse Rescue & Sanctuary in Corryton, Tenn., which provides horse-based therapy and educational opportunities. There, Waggoner will continue to serve the residents of East Tennessee.
